Youth Education

Local youth have been involved on the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands since before its designation as part of the California Coastal National Monument. Students from the Pacific Community Charter School participated in the effort for monument designation by creating a book of watercolors and letters to President and First Lady Obama after spending time hiking, photographing, and exploring the lands. Their middle school class went to Washington D.C. and met with Congressman Huffman and Secretary Jewel after the monument designation. It was an inspiring experience for the students and the lands continue to provide inspiration for learning.

Youth education on the lands continues through collaboration with the Pacific Community Charter School (PCCS) and ACORN Partners in Education. ACORN developed a Naturalist Guide and Fieldy Study Lesson Plans for the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands & Marine Protected Areas to support field studies that feature activities aligned with state science standards. PCCS students regularly visit the land to help with invasive plant removal, create poetry and art, learn about the local ecosystem, and meet with conservation professionals, including those from the BLM Ukiah Field Office.
