CELEBRATE THE COAST 2024: TEN YEAR MONUMENTAL SUCCESS

Friends of Point Arena – Stornetta Lands (FPASL) extend a big thank you to all of the collaborators, who together, made our Ten-Year Anniversary Celebration of the 1,665-acre PASL as a National Monument a success! Special appreciation to former President Obama who signed the official 2014 proclamation and US Congressman, Jared Huffman, who’s first legislation involved the PASL monument. On Saturday, Huffman joined a crowd of over 180 locals as a special guest and key note speaker.

We thank our partners and friends at BLM Ukiah, PA Lighthouse, Mendocino College, Trust for Public Lands and the PA Merchants Association. Sincere appreciation to the many leaders of the walks and talks who shared their unique knowledge, including individuals from Acorn Partners, The Nature Conservancy, Mendocino Land Trust, Calif Native Plant Society, Audubon, Beach Watch, Manchester Pomo and BLM Archaeology.

We appreciate the donated ad space from Liisberg&Co, the fun interview on KGUA and the historical articles from Susan and Claire at the ICO. Food items from Anchor Bay Store, The Farm, Arena Cove Market, and The Pier Place enriched the day. And another shout out to Congressman Huffman, who “served the public” by serving bowls of chowder alongside the Arena Cove Stewards.

We were thrilled to have fifteen 2014 VIPs attend who worked tirelessly ten (and twenty!) years ago to protect these lands. Lastly, we were honored to start our celebration with elders and dancers from the Manchester Band of Pomo Indians, the original stewards of these lands. We acknowledge that the Point Arena – Stornetta Lands have been a gathering place since time immemorial and is the traditional and ancestral homeland of the coastal Pomo tribes.

Sincerely,

FPASL Board Members
Leslie Dahlhoff, Merita Whatley, Jen Ketring, Patricia Schmidt and Kathleen Chasey
